The barbershop at the corner of Kinney and Hamilton, Precision Blendz, 7500 Hamilton Avenue, is a happening place – there’s a waiting line for service most days. Loyal customers from all over Cincinnati keep the staff busy, and many of the clientele travel across town and even from as far as Columbus for the great cuts and the personable service.

Proprietor Tommy Mays reveals the simple secret to his success in a quiet voice tinged with pride – “They tell me I’m the best.” Mr.Mays, who goes by the nickname T Small, loves barbering. He says that, since attending barber school, it’s the only kind of work he’s done in the last 20 years.  He calls it the ultimate people-oriented job.

I asked about the poster in the window advertising the barbershop as a proud supporter of the Mt. Healthy schools. Mr. Mays says modestly that though he doesn’t give a lot of money – not the deep pockets of a Kroger or P&G – still, he says, his business is community-based and community-oriented. “Lots of our clients are kids, or have kids that go to school here,” he says. He adds that his own kids attend Mt. Healthy schools.

Mr. Mays and his business partner, Mike T, will be celebrating five years in business in April 2015.
